What is BMR?
Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the number of calories your body needs to accomplish its most basic (basal) life-sustaining functions.
What affects BMR?
- Age: BMR decreases as you age
- Gender: Men generally have a higher BMR than women
- Body size: Larger bodies require more energy
- Body composition: Muscle uses more energy than fat
- Climate: Cold environments can increase BMR
- Hormones: Thyroid hormones regulate BMR
How we calculate BMR
This calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor Equation:
For men:
BMR = 10W + 6.25H - 5A + 5
For women:
BMR = 10W + 6.25H - 5A - 161
Where W = weight in kg, H = height in cm, A = age in years
