Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the number of calories your body needs to accomplish its most basic (basal) life-sustaining functions.

What affects BMR?

  • Gender: Men generally have a higher BMR than women
  • Body size: Larger bodies require more energy
  • Body composition: Muscle uses more energy than fat
  • Climate: Cold environments can increase BMR
  • Hormones: Thyroid hormones regulate BMR

How we calculate BMR

This calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor Equation:

For men:

BMR = 10W + 6.25H - 5A + 5

For women:

BMR = 10W + 6.25H - 5A - 161

Where W = weight in kg, H = height in cm, A = age in years
